Explanation of the ArchitectThe archetypal form of the ICC embodies universality and timelessness. The sculptural figure is based on a distinct play of circles, the circle being the simplest primitive form known since the beginning of history. The bowl floats above the dunes and abstractly expresses balance, vulnerability, openness and the unity of mankind with nature. It is understood and recognised equally by someone coming from Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia or the Americas. |
Opinion of the JuryThe design shows a 'powerful something', like a big sphere, which is landed in a woody environment. The Jury found this a strong and iconical approach, but the connection to the environment caused doubts among the Jury. Even though it is a very sympathetic scheme, with the ground floor absorbed in the surroundings, some Jury members found that it does not bring what it promises. The large amount of closed facade areas of the sphere create an ambivalent and sealed appearance. In terms of functionality the compact concept offers reasonable distances. An effective separation as well as proximity if required are provided. A characteristic is the actual split into two buildings with different typology; the strict figures set limits for modifications. Also the 'bottleneck' hinders effective circulation and communication. The Jury found the design rather challenging on behalf of construction and especially maintenance. The energy and environmental concept is not clear. |
