Explanation of the Architect

The Form Follows the Environment

Since the competition site is located at the boundary between sand dunes (Natura 2000) and the city of Hague, a design that can fuse these two elements is necessary. The optimum form, which we have determined according to the conditions of the area’s wind, light, water, and local situation will have minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

  • The wind flows into the city without any interruption.
  • Connection of city and nature with ecological corridors.

Opinion of the Jury

The author explains the design as a form following the environment. The proposed concept gives a very clear picture of the environmental aspects, such as wind, water and light. In a natural way the building is absorbed by the surroundings. Nature is taking part of the whole premises. The Jury found this approach as interesting but not strong enough to reflect the values of the ICC. The working conditions were considered as poor. Internal orientation and flexibility do not meet the requirements of the ICC.
